Speaking to a spirited crowd of supporters in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, Mamdani celebrated a decisive victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, defeating the veteran politician by more than eight percentage points with nearly all votes counted. His win marks a historic first — Mamdani will become New York City’s first Muslim mayor and one of the most prominent Democratic Socialists to hold executive office in the United States.
Mamdani, the son of Ugandan-Indian immigrants and a state assemblyman from Queens, framed his victory as part of a larger national struggle against right-wing populism. In perhaps the most striking moment of the night, he addressed himself directly to Trump, saying:
“If there’s any way to terrify a despot, it’s by dismantling the very systems that gave him power. So, Donald Trump — since I know you’re watching — I’ve got four words for you: Turn. The.

Volume. Up.”
The line drew roaring cheers from the crowd and quickly trended across social media.
Mamdani laid out a series of progressive policy priorities that he said will define his administration, from clamping down on exploitative landlords to fighting corruption that favors the wealthy to expanding worker protections and union rights. “When working people have ironclad rights,” he said, “the billionaires who exploit them become very small indeed.”
Promising to restore transparency and accountability in the governance of the city, Mamdani said New York would continue to be “a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and — as of tonight — led by an immigrant.”
Mamdani’s victory was part of a wave of Democratic wins on election night. Mikie Sherrill flipped New Jersey’s governorship in a hotly contested race, while Abigail Spanberger became the first female governor of Virginia, signaling strong momentum for Democrats going into 2026.
Meanwhile, Trump — still active on his social media platform Truth Social — responded to the results late Tuesday by calling for sweeping election reforms — stricter voter ID laws and a national ban on mail-in ballots. In a cryptic message shortly after Mamdani’s speech, Trump wrote:
